Using domain in e-mail Marketing

Hello,
I am new to this space and am currently going through the starter materials.
I noticed the recommendation to use a custom domain to improve email deliverability. However, my previous experience has been the opposite.
Emails sent from my Gmail address have had better deliverability than emails sent from my custom domain. Messages from my custom domain end up in the spam folder.
What might I be missing here? Is there something specific that needs to be set up correctly for a custom domain to perform better?
