—it’s trying to tell you something hurts.
Head tossing is one of the most common frustrations riders face—but more often than not, it’s not a behavioral problem. Persistent tossing usually points to dental issues or TMJ (jaw) pain.
Horses rely on a perfectly aligned jaw and healthy teeth to carry the bit comfortably. When the temporomandibular joint is sore or teeth are uneven, even the lightest pressure can trigger a toss. Unlike “behavioral” head tossing, pain-induced tossing is consistent and immediate, signaling discomfort rather than defiance.
✅ Watch for: head tossing as soon as tack is applied, jaw sensitivity, uneven chewing, or improvement after dental/TMJ care.
Your horse doesn’t need a lecture—they need relief. Start with a vet or equine dentist evaluation, and you could see a calmer, more willing horse almost instantly.
