Baudelaire said of Delacroix that he "had a passion for notes and sketches and made them wherever he was."
In 1832 Delacroix travelled to Morocco and filled small notebooks with whatever was in front of him. Quick ink drawings, a wash of colour, and notes to himself squeezed into the gaps. A wall painted yellow. A dress in a very bright pink. Half a figure, three lines and done.
None of it is finished. It was never meant to be. He was collecting.
Years later he wrote:
"I began to make something tolerable of my African journey only when I had forgotten the trivial details and remembered nothing but the striking and the poetic side of the subject. Up to that time, I had been haunted by this passion for accuracy that most people mistake for truth."
