The call came from an older couple having a new problem with a dog they've had for three years. We had a very productive consult and they asked if I would show them how to properly use a collar they purchased, Our next few sessions went well and they understand the proper use of the collar. Then they told me they were surprised I was willing to use that particular collar. Which surprised me! The lesson is 1) It's never about punishment, any correction is a distraction to get the dogs attention. Dogs learn from reward, praise touch affection. 2) Punishment will teach avoidance, they will associate don't do this around you rather than change the behavior. 3) Harsh treatment will teach your dog to be afraid of you or get aggessive towards you. We have to ask what did the dog learn. First your dog has to learn what TO DO. Sit stay and pay attention. Then introduce the trigger to teach tolerance. Praise the good behavior so the dog knows a behavior is not necessary and there is no threat. What I call The affection Connection means YOU become the reward. Teach your dog this behavior gets you lovein!
