Divine Insight Session 1 - Jesus Heals the Blind Man
Hesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. 23He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” 24He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.” 25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”
Upon reflecting on this passage, I realized the profound love that had been lost to the blind man. I felt a deep sense of abandonment and outcast within my heart for him. I imagined that as a child, he might not have been aware of his blindness until later in life when he became fully conscious of his condition. I also considered the possibility that he was abandoned by his family and loved ones, deepening his turmoil. Yet, it is beautiful to see how God reaches out to the brokenhearted. Out of all the people that day, God sought him out. He was present at the moment when people brought the blind man to Him. Sometimes it is complete strangers who bring others to Christ, but ultimately, it is Christ who draws the lowly to Himself through others, signs, and wonders. As Scripture says, "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself" (John 12:32). God continuously seeks us out.
In my journey toward getting closer to God, He has opened the eyes of my heart, allowing me to discern what is good and evil in the world and within the depths of my heart. It is one thing to see the natural world, but it is another to have our eyes opened spiritually. When we begin to live at a supernatural level, we see things for what they truly are, not just as we initially perceive them. God not only heals the blind but also restores sight to even the most spiritually lost. More importantly, He gives us a glimpse of what is to come, a taste of the abundance of life that awaits us—a restoration of true, unconditional love for all of humanity.
While we can experience this love and abundance here and now with open hearts, we must not become complacent. We are called to live our lives with great care, striving to live virtuously, follow the commandments, and seek unity with God. The greatest torment at the end of time will be the separation from God, rather than the physical torments of hell, should one choose to deny God at the time of judgment. As Jesus said, "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many" (Matthew 7:13). This life is not a game, and there are only two ways to live: in unity with God or as His enemy. There is no middle ground.
Being a good person and doing good deeds is not enough to achieve union with God. It is dangerous for the soul to think it is secure with God merely because it lives a normal life, harms no one, and keeps to itself. The battle for the soul is intense and ongoing. Stress, anxiety, anger, frustration, and selfishness are all symptoms of spiritual attacks that seek to keep the soul separated from God and make it believe it is self-sufficient. No one can fight this spiritual battle alone; we need a Savior. We need Jesus and the assistance of angels to help us in this struggle.
