Free open-source Adobe alternatives drop ~ built by AI

Software engineer Brandon Thomas just released ArtCraft: seven free, open-source apps that mirror Adobe's Creative Cloud lineup. PhotoCraft stands in for Photoshop, FilmCraft for Premiere Pro, VectorCraft for Illustrator, LightCraft for Lightroom, EffectCraft for After Effects, DesignCraft for InDesign, and PdfCraft for Acrobat. Every line was written from scratch in Rust ~ no Adobe code, clean-room build, not affiliated with Adobe ~ and most of it was written by Claude Opus 5.5 running eight parallel coding agents. The project pulled over 22,000 GitHub stars in its first week.

Now the honest part ~ these are early builds. PhotoCraft is in early alpha and the rest are still in development. Their own docs say they're only about a quarter to a third of the way to "a pro could switch for daily work." Testers call it glitchy-but-real Photoshop. Don't cancel your Creative Cloud on Monday.

Why it matters to you: if you've ever stared at Adobe's monthly bill and felt trapped, this is the crack in the wall you've been waiting for. And here's the deeper thing ~ an AI helped build Photoshop's replacement. That's the whole thesis playing out in real time: stop using AI like a tool, start building with it like a collaborator. Somebody just did, and now we all get the tools.
