Yankees Reporting Taylor Trammell's bat
The Yankees manager Boone Taylor Tramell's (from the astros) bat and requested that it be investigated for possible cheating. On the bat you can see a large spot where the black paint of the bat is completely warn off. The accusation is that the bat has been sanded which can create a competitive advantage. The Question here is "Is Boone wrong for doing this, or should this be done more?" The MLB is a multi billion dollar industry that people have their lives intertwined with. Single at bats cost thousands of dollars for Ex.. Bryce Harper and what his contract equals out to is $62,000 dollars per at bat this season. When given this perspective you can calculate and understand why contracts are so large for these players. This makes the importance of not having cheating in the game even more important. On top of that, how many times have you seen a season completely change for a team or player with a single swing? A great example of this is Freddie freeman walk off grand slam last year. that game completely changed the course of the world series and might as well have won it for them. So in my opinion Boone questioning this bat without being hostile towards the Astros or Taylor himself preemptively was great. I think that its important for coaches to be comfortable useing these types of challenges and investigations. If we scare managers away from questioning things then more will slip through the cracks. Batting average over rated?
With all of the different stats in baseball its no surprise that players can make a difference on a team even with a lower AVG. the current example that comes to mind is The big dumper (Cal Raleigh). He is holding a .240 AVG which is ties for #123 in the MLB. Not a fantastic average, however his league leading 51 HR and 109 RBIs far outweigh that. Does this mean that batting AVG is outdated? I don't believe so, I still think AVG is a very crucial stat. However i do feel that when looking at AVG you also need to look and what kind of player it is. Bombers typically have lower AVG but drive in runs for their team. You wouldn't want your lead off hitter to only be hitting .200-.240 that sets your team up for failure. You also have to consider overall AVG vs. Streak AVG. Some players like Max Muncy started off the season with a .150 AVG and then make a late season run. Muncy for example hit for an AVG of .333 in august this year. significantly better than his original start. What do you think?
