This morning I found myself reflecting on how disappointment actually moves through the body, not just the mind.
Recently, disappointment came up for me — and what surprised me most was my first automatic response.
My system went straight into:• punishment• withdrawal• inertia• freeze
Not consciously…Somatically.
And this is where the work of Irene Lyon and The Body Keeps the Score lands so powerfully — because disappointment doesn’t live as a “thought problem. ”It lives as a nervous system experience.
Somatically, disappointment is often held in:• the chest (grief + expectation)• the diaphragm/solar plexus (power + control)• the throat (unexpressed truth)• the belly (safety + worth)
It can feel like:• heaviness• pressure• collapse• fatigue• numbness• emotional flatness• or shutdown
The body often reads disappointment as a threat to safety, expectation, or self-trust.
✨ What changed everything for me
Instead of staying in that old pattern, I made a conscious nervous-system-led choice.
I went back to my design affirmations — not to bypass what I was feeling, but to reorient my system toward truth.
I revisited:• what I’m here to do• who I’m here to be• my natural strengths• my predictable shadows• what throws me off course• what anchors me back into alignment
And something shifted — not just mentally, but in my body.
My system softened. My breath returned. My self-trust recalibrated. And I navigated the disappointment from leadership instead of collapse.
That’s growth in real time.
