I have travelled through many countries and probably just as many centuries if you consider reincarnation.
This last trip to Portugal and Spain was just as enlightening, although this time I was not enthused by my usual joys — architecture, old towns and the like. This journey, I was conscious of the people living their everyday lives and passions, celebrating their traditions and cultural personalities.
And yet what strikes me most forcefully now is this: any future we wish to create, any New World worth the name, has nothing to do with the Past. Not its History, Culture, Traditions, Beliefs — religious or political — and especially not its currency.
So many of these things are divisive — keeping the whole planet on its toes in angst. Separating us from each other, tempting us to stand for ideas and ideals that we unthinkingly protect or covet, because we have all been brought up to believe we must possess in order to exist in the eyes of others.
Nothing is wrong with possessing things. What I am seeing is the pressure our current inbred attitudes create in us — as individuals, as communities, as nations.
So here is my question for you: What is your ideal vision for a future world where free people exist? How do you get beyond the confines of your upbringing and populate the world with an open mind?
Not fluffy stuff — we can't exit stage left because we have invested so much into this current farce. But we can begin to imagine something genuinely different.
What I'm talking about is no currency in the monetary sense. Instead: the value of presence, of need, of pride in exchange. Because each and every one of us is a genius in something the other needs to know, learn from, and thrive on.
Any new world has to be just that — New. Original. Pristine. Not a renovation of the old, but a different house entirely.
What will you bring to build it?
