Cultivating a Safe Space for Growth
Entering a new class naturally brings a sense of vulnerability, and that as a dance instructor is something to honor. The same goes for dance and movement; both ask us to be present, expressive, and sometimes exposed. By acknowledging that vulnerability, we can build a supportive environment where everyone feels free to explore. Creating a space that nurtures both personal and artistic growth.
Some tools that can help are light hearted games and or tasks that ask students to check in. When students take time to check in with themselves holistically—acknowledging how they feel emotionally, mentally, and physically—they develop greater self-awareness. That awareness not only supports their well-being but also enhances their ability to learn, connect, and thrive in the classroom.
What are ways in which you have felt safe in a dance class? What tools did that instructor use to create this environment?
