How to quickly get first ideal clients as a freelance filmmaker?
A student asked me how to get their first paying client without a portfolio. 🤔💰 If you have basic skills, try this: 1. Pick a niche you love ❤️ – like kitesurfing, for example. 2. Offer a free test project 🎥 – Ask a local shop owner if you can make a short promo video for them. In return, have them display it in their store, let you leave business cards the store, and post it on your website with your name --> SPREAD IT 3. Use it as proof ✅ – Now have a real project to show. Pitch other kitesurfing shops or surf brands - maybe even somebody lurks on the website of the Surf Shop you promoted and likes your work - Start with low prices, and increase them as you gain experience and proof. 🚀 For Inspiration: FREE TEST PROJECT EXAMPLE: A Tribute to One Eye PAID FILM FOR CLIENT: The Invention of the WetSuit by Jack O´Neill

Hi everyone! 👋
I’m Tafadzwa from the UK, Huddersfield and I’m excited to be part of this community. I’m passionate about filmmaking and visual storytelling. Over the past year I’ve been investing heavily in learning cinematography, lighting, sound, camera movement, colour grading, and everything that goes into creating films that people genuinely connect with. I’m currently producing my first narrative short film, Overtime, and it’s been an incredible learning experience—from pre-production and shot planning to building a small production setup and working with actors. Alongside that, I also create YouTube content and podcasts, so I’m always looking for ways to improve my storytelling and production quality. I joined this community because I believe the fastest way to grow is by learning from other filmmakers, sharing ideas, giving and receiving honest feedback, and building relationships with people who love the craft as much as I do. If anyone would be willing to mentor me, review my work, or share advice that could help make Overtime the best film it can be, I’d be incredibly grateful. Whether it’s feedback on cinematography, lighting, directing, editing, or storytelling, I’m here to learn and would really appreciate your guidance. Looking forward to getting to know you all, seeing your work, and learning together. Thanks for having me! 🎬
