Midnight thoughts
A peak behind the scenes into my studio practice and personal life:
Lately I’ve been sleeping A LOT. Resting, dilly dallying,
Spending less time scrolling on my phone on purpose.
Caring less and less about social media in general.
I go through these phases as a creative person where I need to recalibrate.
I need to move slower,
See deeper.
Slow enough to notice the little pores on the skin of an orange.
Slow enough to see the veining in my skin.
Slow enough to notice every little detail of the real world and real life.
There’s this silent war happening within each of our homes.
The war for attention.
Our attention has been hijacked like crazy by technology.
We’re all addicted and don’t want to admit it.
The screen hypnotizes you so quickly, zoning out and highjacking your every thought.
It’s so important now more than ever for us to notice this.
To rebel in our own way by taking inventory of our relationship with our smart phones.
To catch yourself when you start to scroll mindlessly, and instead choose to lock the phone and simply stare into space.
Staring into space, being bored, letting your mind wander. Looking outside. Deeply noticing the details of the real work, is what makes you an artist.
Being able to feel the world through all of your senses.
Being able to express what you’re experiencing through lines and shapes and colors.
This sacred process of what it actually takes to create art is seriously being compromised by our failure to notice.
You can’t be an artist if you don’t notice things deeply.
You can’t create a work of art that shows emotion, life and energy. If you never give yourself the time and space to experience that emotion life and energy for yourself.
Be greedy with your attention.
Don’t waste it foolishly.
Be aggressively observant of how you spend your time on your phone.
Be strict with yourself and lock it.
and remember, don’t feel bad for doing “nothing”
Sometimes your brain and body need to do “nothing” in order to take in EVERYTHING.
Doing nothing is apart of the process that creates the art.
