Good morning, Purpose Lab family.
One of the most common mistakes on the NHA CPT exam is getting the order of draw wrong. This is also one of the most common mistakes new phlebotomists make on the job.
Here is the order you need to know by heart:
- Blood culture tubes (yellow)
- Citrate tubes (light blue)
- Serum tubes (red or gold)
- Heparin tubes (green)
- EDTA tubes (lavender)
- Oxalate/fluoride tubes (gray)
Why does this matter? Drawing tubes in the wrong order can contaminate your samples. This can lead to inaccurate lab results, which can affect patient care.
A simple way to remember it: Stop Light Red Green Light Grey
If you are studying for your exam, write this order on an index card. Read it out loud three times a day until it becomes automatic.
