Study Tips + Exam Day Basics
Studying for the NHA CPT exam can feel overwhelming. Here's what actually works. How to Study Smart Study in short blocks. Twenty to thirty minutes of focused study beats three hours of distracted studying. Use the categories from your study checklist as your roadmap: Safety and Infection Control, Patient Prep and ID, Order of Draw, Specimen Handling, Documentation, Equipment and Supplies, and Communication and Professionalism. Order of Draw takes repetition. Say it out loud daily until it becomes automatic. Use flashcards for anything that's pure recall, like tube colors, additives, and needle gauges. Study the why behind each rule, not just the rule itself. The exam tests understanding, not memorization. Go through your checklist once a week. If you have not checked something off twice, spend more time there. Try explaining a concept out loud like you're teaching someone else. If you can teach it, you know it. What to Expect on Exam Day Know your ID requirements and arrival time ahead of time. The exam is multiple choice. Read each question carefully, not just quickly. Common trip-up areas include specimen rejection criteria, chain-of-custody basics, and scope-of-practice questions. Get sleep the night before. Eat something. Arrive early so you're not rushed. If you don't pass on the first try, that does not define you. You can retake it. Your Move Pull out your study checklist this week and check off what you've covered. Comment READY if you're locking in your study plan. There is purpose in the blood.
