This is also one of the most common mistakes new phlebotomists make on the job. Here is the order you need to know by heart: 1. Blood culture tubes (yellow) 2. Citrate tubes (light blue) 3. Serum tubes (red or gold) 4. Heparin tubes (green) 5. EDTA tubes (lavender) 6. Oxalate/fluoride tubes (gray) Why does this matter? Drawing tubes in the wrong order can contaminate your samples. This can lead to inaccurate lab results, which can affect patient care. A simple way to remember it: Stop Light Red Green Light Grey If you are studying for your exam, write this order on an index card. Read it out loud three times a day until it becomes automatic.
