๐Ÿพ Too Hot for a Walk? โ˜€๏ธ
When the temperature rises, remember that hot pavement can burn your companion's paw pads in just seconds. If it's too hot outside, it's okay to skip the walk and bring the fun indoors instead!
Here are a few ideas to help your dog burn energy while staying cool:
๐Ÿพ Hide treats around the house and let them sniff them out.
๐Ÿพ Fill a puzzle and treat toys with pumpkin, plain yogurt, or xylitol-free peanut butter and freeze them.
๐Ÿพ Spend 5โ€“10 minutes practicing tricks or basic obedience. Mental exercise can be just as tiring as physical exercise.
๐Ÿพ Play a gentle game of fetch down a hallway or a game of tug.
๐Ÿพ Offer a frozen lick mat for a cool, calming activity.
๐Ÿพ Freeze a damp towel for a few minutes and let them relax on it, or use a cooling mat if you have one.
๐Ÿพ Keep fans running, close the blinds during the hottest part of the day, and make sure fresh, cool water is always available. You can even add a few ice cubes to their water dish for an extra treat.
โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿพ If you live somewhere with extremely hot sidewalks, dog booties designed for hot pavement can help protect their paws. Even so, early morning or evening walks are still the safest choice. If you can't comfortably keep the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws.
Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is stay inside. A little creativity, a few games, and some extra snuggles can make for a wonderful day together.
