Before we meet, I'd like you to choose the one story you'll be working with. (There are two exercises available in the classroom to help you do this. A fun, interactive AI Quiz and a good old-fashioned worksheet.) Using one particular story for all the Storywork exercises tomorrow is going to help you see some powerful things.
One thing to know before you choose your story. We all have more than one story running. There is no “right” story to bring. Any story that rises to the surface is the right one to work with.
When you start pulling on the threads of one story, they all start to loosen. That’s how this works. So don’t overthink it. Trust what comes up.
Here are some stories I’ve worked through (to help you get clear about what I mean by a story.)
- I have to be the best to feel safe.
- I have to be perfect to be loved.
- I have to prove I'm worth keeping.
- It has to be perfect or I'm embarrassed.
- I have to be polished before I can be powerful.
- I need to know more before I'll be ready.
- It's not safe to share what I really think.
- My needs can wait until the work is done.
- If I slow down, I'll lose momentum.
Can you see that ALL of those are stories? And all of them started with PROTECTION.
