This is the single most important thing I teach in my coaching.
Most high performers — especially veterans and first responders — have fused who they are with what they do. When they perform well, they feel worthy. When they don't, something deeper than disappointment kicks in.
That fusion is the source of burnout, imposter syndrome, and the quiet desperation I see in leaders who look successful on the outside but feel empty on the inside.
Here's the test: Can you describe yourself without referencing your job title, your rank, your accomplishments, or your income?
If that question makes you uncomfortable — that's where the real work starts.
Try it in the comments. Describe who you are without referencing what you've done.
