Imagine being asked to recreate a masterpiece, say, a version of Van Gogh's "Starry Night," and knowing your version might be the only one a room full of people ever gets to see. You wouldn't take that lightly. You'd study his brushstrokes, his color choices, the composition, everything, to make sure you were honoring what he actually intended.
That's exactly the opportunity we have every time we play a piece of music. We're the ones bringing a composer's creation to life for the people listening. And to do that piece justice, we need to actually understand what's happening beneath the notes.
That's what music theory gives us. It's the chance to get behind the symbols on the page and into the DNA of the music itself, to uncover the messages composers built into their work so we can experience it more fully and share it more meaningfully with others.
I am so excited to take this journey with each of you! - Mari
