The corridor opens into a tiny stone theatre.
Rows of silent figures sit watching a small stage lit by a single yellow lamp.
At centre stage, a very tall old man stands beside a velvet-covered pedestal.
With enormous solemnity, he pulls away the cloth to reveal a turnip.
The audience applauds politely.
The old man nods once, replaces the cloth, waits a few moments, then unveils the same turnip again.
More polite applause.
At the rear of the theatre are two small, arched doors:

💧 one noticeably damp
