Got a great question from one of our members this week — struggling with orange peel and dry spray on the clear coat, wanting to know how to get a proper glass-like finish. This is genuinely one of the most common things people run into, so if this is you too, you're in good company. Here's the breakdown: Orange peel and dry spray usually come from the same root cause — the clear coat drying too fast before it has a chance to properly land and flow out on the panel. Reducer speed — the biggest one. If your workshop is warm and you're using a fast reducer, the clear starts setting before it's had time to level out. Switch to a slower reducer in warm conditions — it gives the paint more time to flow before it flashes. Gun distance — aim for around 15-18cm from the panel for clear coat. Any further and the spray is partially drying in the air before it even lands, which gives you that rough texture and orange peel. Too close and you'll swing the other way into heavy, wet application and runs — so it's about finding the right distance and keeping it consistent. Air pressure — too high breaks the paint into smaller droplets that don't merge properly on the surface. Try dropping it a touch. Gun speed and overlap — moving too quickly means less material lands per pass, so it dries faster and rougher. Slow down slightly and keep it consistent, and make sure you're overlapping each pass by 50%, so the centre of each new pass covers the edge of the last one. Get this right and you won't go wrong. Start with reducer speed, distance and that 50% overlap first — those three together sort this out more often than not. Always test on a spare panel or a bit of cardboard before going back to the actual car. A glass-like finish comes down to giving the clear enough time to flow before it sets, and applying it consistently across the whole panel. Anyone else dealing with this?
