The formula: être + past participle (conjugated)
And here's the important difference: when you use être, the past participle agrees with the subject — add -e for feminine, -s for masculine plural, -es for feminine plural!
Je suis allé / allée — I went
Tu es parti / partie — You left
Il est arrivé — He arrived
Elle est arrivée — She arrived
Nous sommes venus / venues — We came
Vous êtes restés / restées — You stayed
Ils sont entrés — They entered
Elles sont entrées — They entered
The easiest way to remember which verbs take être: most of them involve movement or a change of state — going, coming, arriving, leaving, being born, dying.
aller , venir, rester, tomber, devenir, entrer - sortir, arriver - partir, monter - descendre, naître - mourir, revenir, rentrer.
tous les verbes pronominaux
se laver, s'adresser, etc.
