The Break Away Tutors Origin Story
Before I became a full-time online tutor, I spent four years working as a scientist 🔬. I started in January 2020 as a trainee scientist and worked my way up to Senior Certification Scientist by April 2024. On paper, it sounded impressive. In reality, I was exhausted, restricted, and watching my ambitions shrink.
When I resigned, I was earning £45,000 a year—but I was giving up something far more valuable: my freedom ✨.
Where it all began:
My career started right before COVID-19 hit 🌍. For a year and a half, I worked fully from home and proved I could do my job without ever stepping into the office.
But when things “returned to normal,” my company ordered me back twice a week. My office was two hours away !! 🚗💨.
Suddenly I was losing 8 hours of travel every week and spending £30 just to show face in a building I didn’t need. With a young family and rising costs of living, I felt trapped.
I wanted location freedom. Plain and simple 🗺️.That’s when tutoring entered my life.
My tutoring journey — the real, unfiltered version:
When I started tutoring in 2022, I had no clue what I was doing 😅.
- I charged £15/hour because I had to revise before every lesson
- I got questions wrong
- I taught straight from textbooks
- I handed out leaflets outside train stations 🚉
- I stuck up posters anywhere I legally could
I was desperate for clients and learning everything the hard way.
My first year? £5,000 total. Painful 😬.
But I was learning.
Year two? £15,000. Better.
I reinvested everything into courses, books, and training 📚.This time, I IMPLEMENTED every lesson immediately.
Then things took off.
From earning £1,800 per month in late 2023…To earning £5,000 in March 2024…And over £6,000 in April 2024 🚀.
I finally bought the freedom I’d been chasing.
The turning point
Between January 2024 and July 2025, my tutoring business made over $100,000 💰.
That’s an average of $5,700 per month, even during slow summer months—completely surpassing my UK scientist salary.
I moved abroad 🌴 My cost of living dropped. My quality of life skyrocketed!! And for the first time ever, I felt in control of my time, my income, and my future.
Why I created Break Away Tutors
I built Break Away Tutors because I know how lonely the journey feels when you’re figuring everything out alone 🤝.
When I started, I had:
- No mentor
- No roadmap
- No marketing plan
- No idea what software to use
- No network
- No system for finding students
I wasted time, money, and energy learning everything from scratch.
I don’t want other educators to go through the same.
Break Away Tutors exists for one purpose:
To help teachers and educators break out of the classroom or 9–5 and experience the freedom of online tutoring 🚪✨.
