I'm Alicia Caine, co-owner of Catty Shack Maine Coons, where we raise Maine Coon kittens with a pretty big emphasis on who they're becoming, not just what they look like. One of the biggest parts of our breeding program is something we call our Brave Kitten Protocol. From the time our kittens are tiny, we're intentionally introducing them to the sights, sounds, handling, and everyday experiences they'll encounter in their future homes. Car rides. Baths. Grooming. Nail trims. Household noises. New environments. But we're not just exposing them to things and hoping they get used to them. We're working to build positive associations, recognize their individual comfort levels, and help them develop confidence through experiences that feel safe and manageable. And we've seen firsthand what a difference that preparation can make when our kittens leave us and join their new families. But here's what got me thinking... What about all the cats who didn't grow up with that kind of preparation? The adult cats who panic when the carrier comes out. The ones who scream through every car ride. The ones who think a vacuum cleaner is a personal threat to their existence. Surely they deserve the opportunity to become a little braver, too. And that's where the idea for Brave Cat Academy came from. I wanted to take the principles we've developed through raising our kittens and make them accessible to families with cats of ALL ages and breeds. Because while early socialization gives kittens a wonderful foundation, it doesn't mean an adult cat has missed their chance to learn. We'll be creating guided challenges and courses for car rides, grooming, baths, harness training, household noises, and all kinds of everyday experiences. And we're going to bring our own adult Catty Shack cats along for the learning process, too. Some of them are wonderfully confident. Others have very strong opinions about what constitutes an acceptable activity. 😂 Our goal isn't to make every cat fearless.
