Weaponizing the corner as an offensive rebounding opportunity was the best return on investment we made this season. Some key data points and why we emphasized it so much.
- It sets up your transition defense
A guaranteed way to start behind in transition is having corner players who do nothing after the shot. We teach our players to sprint through the lane to rebound, which actually helps us match up faster when the other team pushes.
- Low defender typically has the worst vision
Boxing out the deep corner is one of the hardest assignments on the floor. The defender usually has to completely turn their head to find the offensive player.
- It uses our guards’ quickness to steal possessions
Our bigs are typically engaged inside, which often gives guards a clean path to the rim from the corner.
