St. Michael's Lent 2025
Last year I took it on, and I can honestly say it was very fruitful in spiritual gifts. I limited myself to one meal a day, prayed the prayer rope daily, took cold showers, and prayed the St. Michael Prayer every day.
That said—since we’re all focused on maintaining our protein intake and muscle growth—fasting to one meal a day might not be ideal for our gains. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still make this a spiritually powerful season.
Here are some alternatives to fasting from food that can still help us grow in holiness during St. Michael’s Lent (August 15 – September 29):
Alternatives to Fasting
1. Abstain from Something Else (Non-Food) Give up something you enjoy or rely on:
Social media or YouTube
TV or Netflix
Non-sacred music
Coffee or soda
Video games or other hobbies
Using your phone after a set time
2. Spiritual Substitutes Take on practices that draw you closer to God:
Daily Rosary (especially the St. Michael or Sorrowful Mysteries)
Chaplet of St. Michael
15–30 minutes of spiritual reading (Bible, saints, etc.)
Daily Mass or at least one extra Mass per week
Weekly Confession
Eucharistic Adoration once a week
3. Corporal or Spiritual Works of Mercy Offer yourself for the good of others:
Visit the sick or elderly
Donate food or clothing
Forgive someone or pray for your enemies
4. Silence or Simplicity Embrace stillness:
Spend intentional time in silence each day
Avoid distractions or unnecessary noise
Let’s grow stronger not just physically, but spiritually too.
