Most people think Spain = Spanish. But nope Spain actually has 4 co-official languages, and they're all alive and used daily. Catalan 🟨🔴 Everyone knows Catalan here. Obviously we're in Barcelona IRL. Sounds like Spanish and French had a baby. Around 10 million speakers across Catalonia, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands. Basque 🔴🟢⬜ Not related to ANY language on Earth. OLDEST LANGUAGE IN EUROPE !!!! it was here before the Romans, before Indo-European languages spread across the continent. Their word for butterfly is "tximeleta." (I find Euskera the craziest one tbh) Galician 🟦⬜ Super close to Portuguese they can basically understand each other. Spoken in the northwest. heard Spanish (Castellano) 🇪🇸 The one everyone knows. Official everywhere. We call it Castellano here because... there are other Spanish languages. Have you ever heard of these other ones? Asturian in Asturias Aragonese in Aragon Aranese in a tiny valley in the Pyrenees, only 3,000 speakers but it's co-official there Valenciano in Valencia All protected, all still spoken. CRAZY! Why this matters in Barcelona: Street signs? Catalan. Metro announcements? Catalan first. If you say "bon dia" instead of "buenos días," locals will love you for it!
