Bachazouk, not BachaZouk. A few thoughts on the style we created I've been mixing bachata and Brazilian Zouk (when i say Zouk, it means Brazilian Zouk)since the pandemic, but it was only in 2023 that I started calling it Bachazouk. At first it was simple. I took my Bachata Sensual combinations and replaced the headrolls with Brazilian zouk head movement: a tilt turn here, a rotisserie there. Then we added moves that fit specific moments in bachata music really well, like toalha, tornado, one-foot spins and counterbalance. Over time, though, I realized that Bachazouk isn't "Bacha + Zouk." It isn't two styles glued together. It's one sentence, one language. What zouk brings isn't only the look of the moves but its way of dancing: a softer frame, trust in the follower's technique, adapting to each partner, and spin and pivot technique. All of that lives inside a dance that is still lead-and-follow at its core. We also love lead-and-follow musicality, where the leader uses the follower's movement to hit the instruments, and where footwork expresses the music just as much as head movement does. From the very beginning, zouk-looking moves have been just one tool, one way to dance differently from the conventional. What I'm really chasing is to be unique, and Brazilian zouk, sensual bachata, traditional bachata and lambada give us an incredible palette for that. So the goal of teaching Bachazouk has never been to hand out flashy moves to copy. It's to help dancers become more creative and more original. If we teach you ten variations of toalha, we hope you'll invent the eleventh. That's our vision.
