AI Learns Without Forgetting
Ever feel like your AI tools forget everything the moment they learn something new? Turns out, Google Research is tackling that very problem with a completely fresh approach.
In one of their their latest posts, they introduce "Nested Learning", a new standard that rethinks how models learn and remember over time, taking inspiration straight from how our brains handle continual learning.
Here’s what stood out to me:
- Models structured as multiple nested optimization problems
- Architecture and training treated as one continuous process
- Better handling of 'catastrophic forgetting' (when new data wipes old knowledge)
- A new self-modifying model called 'Hope' that learns across multiple levels
- Potential to create truly self-improving, long-term memory AI systems
If this approach really works, it could change how we build and automate systems that need to retain knowledge over time, from intelligent assistants to real-time business automations.
