Do you have an Authority Gap?
You can be very good at what you do and still not be recognised for it.
In fact, I think this is where a lot of experienced professionals find themselves.
They have 10, 20, sometimes 30 years of experience.
They’ve solved difficult problems.
They’ve built businesses, led teams, advised clients and developed knowledge that only comes from actually doing the work.
But outside the people who already know them?
Very few people understand the depth of what they know.
That is what I call The Authority Gap.
It is the gap between the expertise you genuinely possess and the authority the market actually recognises you for.
And it’s an important distinction.
Because being experienced and being recognised as an authority are not the same thing.
You can have considerable expertise and still struggle to explain what makes your thinking different.
You can have an excellent reputation with existing clients but be relatively unknown outside that circle.
You can know you’re good at what you do but have no clear position that makes other people recognise it.
That isn’t necessarily a visibility problem.
Posting more content won’t automatically fix it.
Neither will trying to become louder online.
Because authority is not about being seen more.
It is about being recognised for something specific.
So I want you to consider this: If someone who didn’t already know you looked at your professional presence today, would they quickly understand:
What you are an authority on?
What you believe that is different?
Why your experience matters?
What thinking, methodology or perspective is distinctly yours?
And why they should listen to you rather than someone else in your market?
If those answers aren’t immediately clear, you may have an Authority Gap.
And if you do, the answer isn’t more visibility.
It’s closing the gap between what you know and what the market recognises you for.
So here’s the question: Do you think you have an Authority Gap?
Yes, no, or perhaps you’ve never thought about it before.
I’d genuinely like to know.
