Has anyone opted to buy their own ISBNs instead of using the free ones provided by Amazon KDP?

I’m trying to understand the real pros and cons from people’s actual experience — especially around:

• ownership/control of the book metadata

• distribution flexibility outside Amazon

• whether it’s worth the upfront cost for indie authors

Would really appreciate hearing what you did and why you chose that route (or didn’t).
