“Free Dog” is a release word that lets your dog know they’re officially off duty. But it’s more than just “you’re free”—it’s also an extra layer of positive reinforcement for working so hard for their favorite person.
When you give the Free Dog cue:
• Be excited — let your dog feel your joy and energy.
• Pile on the praise — verbal praise, scratches, pets.
• Make it fun — have a little “you did it!” party. 🎉
Even service dogs need breaks! Free Dog is their chance to decompress, shake it off, and reset before the next task. It’s incredibly helpful during training and once they’re working out in public.
I use Free Dog in all kinds of situations:
• After short training sessions at home 🏡
• Between tasks in public 🌎 (to give them confidence & a quick reset)
• Before releasing them to go potty 🚽 (sit, stay, praise, then Free Dog!)
• To release them to say "hi" to a trusted friend or family member 👋
💡 Think of Free Dog as your service dog’s paycheck bonus. They worked hard, they got paid—with love, praise, maybe some treats, and the freedom to just be a dog.
At the end of the day, Free Dog is your way of letting them know they’re off duty—whether that’s for five seconds before going back to work, or for a few hours until the next training session. Either way, it’s one of the most valuable and fun tools in your service dog vocabulary. 🐶✨
