Let’s Get It Started
Starting acting can feel overwhelming at first, especially when it seems like everyone already knows how the industry works. The truth is: every actor starts somewhere. Here’s a realistic roadmap to help you begin building your career step by step.
1. Decide What You Want to Pursue
Film/TV? Horror? Voice acting? Commercials? Modeling? Theatre? You do NOT need everything figured out immediately, but knowing your interests helps guide your focus.
2. Get Basic Headshots
You do not need $2,000 Hollywood headshots on day one. Natural lighting, clear quality, and photos that genuinely look like you are the priority.
3. Create Casting Profiles
Start with:
- Actors Access
- Casting Networks
- Backstage
- Local Facebook casting groups
- Casting Workbook (optional)
Fill out your profiles completely and professionally.
4. Build a Simple Resume
Even if you have no credits yet, include:
- training
- special skills
- student films
- community work
- voice work
- dance/singing abilities
Everyone starts with a first credit.
5. Learn Self Tapes
This is one of the MOST important modern acting skills.
Focus on:
- clear audio
- clean background
- good lighting
- natural acting
- framing properly
6. Start Submitting Consistently
The actors who improve fastest are usually the ones consistently auditioning. Student films, indie films, short films, UGC projects, and local productions are all valuable starting points.
7. Learn Industry Professionalism
Respond clearly. Be respectful. Show up prepared. Networking and professionalism matter just as much as talent in this industry.
8. Build Credits & Connections
Every project teaches you something. Every set introduces you to people. Momentum builds over time — not overnight.
9. Develop Your Brand
Social media can absolutely help actors today. Learn how you want to present yourself creatively and professionally online.
10. Don’t Wait For Permission
Most actors spend too long waiting until they feel “ready.” Start now. Learn as you go. Growth comes through experience.
Most importantly: comparison will destroy your confidence faster than failure ever will. Stay focused on YOUR journey and keep creating.
