Bell Siphon not starting properly?
A bell siphon not starting properly is a very common issue in aquaponics and it usually comes down to a balance problem between water inflow, standpipe height, and bell design.
Let’s go through the main reasons and fixes:
1. Water Inflow is Too Low
  • The siphon needs enough water flow to push the air out of the standpipe.
  • If the inflow is weak, the siphon won’t “kick in.”
  • Fix: Increase the water flow into the grow bed (open the pump valve more or use a bigger pump).
2. Water Inflow is Too High
  • If the flow is too strong, the siphon might not trigger properly, or it may not break after draining.
  • Fix: Reduce inflow until the siphon starts smoothly.
3. Standpipe Height Issue
  • The standpipe determines when the siphon should start.
  • If it’s too short, the siphon may not trigger.
  • If it’s too tall, the bed may overflow before it engages.
  • Fix: Adjust the standpipe so the water rises to just below the media surface before siphon kicks in.
4. Bell Not Seated Correctly
  • The bell (cover pipe) must trap air properly.
  • If the bell is loose, tilted, or has gaps at the bottom, the siphon won’t start.
  • Fix: Make sure the bell sits flat on the grow bed and is taller than the standpipe by at least 2–3 cm.
5. Air Leak or Poor Cap
  • If the bell has holes or isn’t sealed at the top, air will leak in and prevent the siphon from starting.
  • Fix: Ensure the bell’s top is fully capped and airtight.
6. Outlet Pipe Design
  • The siphon works better if the outlet pipe goes straight down, creating suction.
  • A horizontal or upward-tilted outlet can stop it from starting.
  • Fix: Angle the drain pipe downward or add a small “U-bend” to help suction.
✅ Quick Test:
  • Put your hand over the bell top to block air—if it starts then, it means airflow balance is off.
  • Try adjusting inflow rate little by little while observing.
