Thank you Ruggero. I'm going to create a 1 page (hopefully) PDF cheat sheet so people can download it at the end of the course. It's on the to-do list!!
🌱 Tilapia vs. Goldfish vs. Catfish — What’s the Best Aquaponics Fish?
Some growers swear tilapia are the perfect beginner fish. Others say goldfish are easier and cheaper. And some argue catfish are tougher and tastier. 👉 If you had to pick just ONE fish for a new aquaponics system, which would it be — and why? Drop your thoughts in the comments 👇 I’m curious to see what our community thinks.

Thank you for that Jean. A vital lesson!! Environment. Luckily, we have you as someone who has done the groundwork with a number of species. 🙏🏻

@Helen Harris Hi Helen. I did a little research and I came up with some potential species that are legally allowed to be grown in a closed loop system. The main thing is to not have any connection to the natural waterways at all. I was surprised about the fresh-water mussels!! Yummy! Here's what i found. I hope it's useful. According to the New Zealand Gazette Notice 2020 No. MPI 1134, the freshwater and common aquaculture species legally permitted for farming in NZ include: - Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) - Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) - Eels – Longfin Eel (Anguilla dieffenbachii) and Shortfin Eel (A. australis) - Perch (Perca fluviatilis) - Pacu – Black Pacu (Colossoma macropomum) and Red-bellied Pacu (Piaractus brachypomus) - Whitebait group (Galaxiids) – e.g. Banded Kōkopu, Inanga, Giant Kōkopu, Koāro, Shortjaw Kōkopu - Freshwater Crayfish (Kōura) – Northern Kōura (Paranephrops planifrons) and Southern Kōura (P. zealandicus) - Freshwater Shrimp (Paratya curvirostris) - Freshwater Mussels (Kākahi) (Hyridella menziesii, Cucumerunio websteri) These are among the freshwater species recognised as “farmable fish” under NZ law.For aquaponics, DOC and MPI advise ensuring your system is fully closed-loop (no inflow/outflow to natural water) and confirming any intended species with your local DOC office before stocking.
👋 Welcome, Edwin!
So glad to have you here, Edwin. @edwin-bomani-8875 Your mission to blend technology with traditional permaculture fits beautifully with what so many of us are exploring in aquaponics. Finding that balance between innovation and nature’s wisdom. You’ll find lots of kindred spirits here who share that curiosity for sustainable systems and closed-loop design. Feel free to share any projects, experiments, or ideas you’re working on. We’d all love to follow your journey.
Welcome Ruan
A big welcome to Ruan Welgemoed. You’ve just joined a group of growers, tinkerers, and nature-lovers who are all exploring smarter, more sustainable ways to grow food. Whether you’re brand new or have been running systems for years, you’re in good company here. Feel free to say hi in the comments and tell us what drew you to aquaponics, or, just have a browse and get inspired. Glad you’re here 💧 Let’s grow together!
