Crochet flat in the round tips
The golden rule for flat circles 🧶
You want to add the same number of stitches every round.
Here’s the cheat sheet most people memorize:
Single crochet (sc): increase 6 stitches per round
Half double crochet (hdc): increase 8 stitches per round
Double crochet (dc): increase 12 stitches per round
Treble crochet (tr): increase 18 stitches per round
That’s because taller stitches need more room to lie flat.
Example: single crochet circle (most common)
Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring
Round 2: inc in every stitch → 12
Round 3: (sc, inc) repeat → 18
Round 4: (2 sc, inc) repeat → 24
Round 5: (3 sc, inc) repeat → 30
…and so on.
Each round adds +6 stitches.
How to tell what’s going wrong
Curling into a bowl?
👉 Not enough increases — add 1–2 more next round.
Wavy / ruffled like a frill?
👉 Too many increases — skip an increase or space them farther apart.
Slight curl early on?
Totally normal. It often relaxes after a few rounds or with blocking.
Pro tip (especially helpful for tight crocheters)
If you crochet tight (lots of us do 🙋‍♀️):
Go up one hook size, or
Add one extra increase per round until it lays flat.
