Using AI for Disaster Recovery Resources for Victims of the California Wildfires (January 2025)
I used AI (more specifically Google's Notebook LM) to create a 14-15 minute audio podcast episode in the victims in Los Angeles, California affected by the raging wildfires, many losing their homes, vehicles, pets ...everything and left homeless. It's a small disaster recovery resource that talks about the importance of 1) filing an insurance claim 2) getting assistance from FEMA 3) trauma informed practitioners and counseling for mental health for post, traumatic stress disorder, and even suicide prevention
I also used ChatGPT for creating a template for (3) use cases and letters (email correspondence) to their insurance companies. That they can customize.
1) the initial insurance claim
2) follow up on the initial insurance claim because with a disaster so widespread there's inevitably going to be a delay
3) and an appeal letter in case their insurance claim is denied
Here is the google spreadsheet:
Feel free to "make a copy" and share.
I'm working on some other stuff too for crisis.
All DIGITAL and AI ... Centralized and digitized , so it's always available in the cloud and easily accessible if you can't find things quickly in the real world. It's on their cell phone. Everyone takes their phone! It's their lifeline and connection to everything.
1) proactive emergency planning for homeowners and those renting properties when you have time and a clear mind
2) urgent checklist during crisis if there is a mandatory evacuation order and they don't have a lot of time and under life-threatening condition conditions, incredibly stressed, scared and rushed and cannot think clearly
3) the aftermath of disaster recovery which involves filing insurance claims , taking an inventory of their home (floor plan, each room) and personal property, individual valuation, receipts , media/photos for evidence of ownership , getting support from FEMA, getting
trauma-informed counseling from mental health professionals , meditations and more .
It's like they tumble to the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy of needs after being "at the top" especially in Los Angeles, CA where there's a lot of affluent people. The contrast is something they're not used to. Most of us normalize all our basic needs being met , but during an unprecedented natural disaster crisis like this we realize we really do need to be grateful for every single blessing in our lives.
So they're not just rebuilding their homes materially , or relocating ...they're rebuilding their lives and there's a lot of Financial legal and psychological consequences to this. A lot of angles as we look at the individual holistically from a variety of different vantage points they need resources. I'm trying to bring "structure" to something that's incredibly overwhelming.
Just trying to use AI in an impactful way today.
