Best Way to Self-Host n8n: Docker vs npm vs npx?
Hi Community Team members,
I’d like to understand how everyone is managing their self-hosted n8n setup and overall usage strategy.
1. Self-hosted n8n Setup
Which installation method are you using for self-hosted n8n?
  • npm
  • npx
  • Docker
  • Any other approach
Which option has worked best for you in terms of performance, stability, and ease of maintenance?
I noticed that during local installation using npm, my computer’s processor usage increases significantly, the fan starts running loudly, and the system feels stressed during setup and dependency installation.
How are you avoiding or managing this issue? Are there recommended lightweight or optimized ways to run n8n locally?
2. n8n Cloud vs Self-Hosting
The n8n Cloud option looks convenient, but for prototype or occasional usage, the monthly subscription can feel expensive especially when using n8n only 1–2 times a month.
How are you managing this situation?
  • Do you prefer self-hosting for testing and prototypes?
  • Are there any cost-effective alternatives?
  • What workflow do you personally follow?
3. Free Trial Limitation
The 14-day free trial is useful, but creating a new email every time for testing is not practical long term.
How do you handle testing after the trial period ends?
Would appreciate hearing your experiences, recommendations, and best practices. Thanks in advance!
