Growing up in Barbados a nursing home (aka Alms Home) was for people who did not have a family to take care of them. In our family we were able to care for our elder members until they passed on. Moving to New York did not change things. After my gran gran had her stroke we brought in physical therapy and she regained her ability to walk using a cane. Years later she had an emergency abdominal surgery and was discharged home with 7 days per week of homecare support. My aunt lived with her, my mom lived down the street and I was a 30 minute drive away. My aunt handled the cleaning and overnight support, my mom cooked for her and I handled the finances plus weekday emergencies. I am grateful that we were able to honor her wishes as she was able to Age In PLACE until she passed in 2008 from a massive heart attack. I do what I do as an Aging In PLACE Strategist in her honor.

Sometimes Aging In PLACE looks like cameras in every room so your daughter can give you verbal support from another city and your son living down the street so you can keep your independence and dignity😊
