Yesterday, I had someone come to my house and tell me I needed to spend $10,000 on a new air conditioning unit. He was a nice guy - confided in me that he has a new baby at home. Seemed discouraged giving me this "bad news," but then proceeded to tell me I could finance this huge expense with a 0% option that "ended tomorrow." When I asked questions for additional clarification, he avoided them.
Something in my spirit felt off.
My husband has worked in appliances - I'm not naive to the fact that technicians receive huge bonuses for "upselling," nor do I disagree with "upselling" in business.... when it's actually applicable.
Again, unironically I had just finished recording the ethical marketing modules - discussing false scarcity. Hammering in on customer pain points.
I had a choice, and I chose Him. I prayed, "God if this is what we need to do, I know you'll provide. I'm not letting the enemy distract me from you." But instead of just sitting in that prayer, I took action.
I started actively shopping in the marketplace. I called another company this morning and had them give me a second estimate. This guy also had a new baby at home. His stepdad owns the company and their values are integrity, family, and customer service. Those are my values. I went from the "Know" part of the customer journey to the "Like" almost instantly.
Not only did he never mention a new air conditioning unit, he charged me $235 to refill my refrigerant and offered to come back next week if the problem wasn't solved. The second step would be a leak test, a new coil, or a plethora of other options before replacing an entire unit.
This company just gained a loyal customer - my "Trust" and my "Retention and Advocacy" as I now will refer them to other homeowners in my area.
This is how your business should operate for long-term sustainability.
Now it would be easy for me to say the first guy was trying to "swindle" or "scam" me. He wasn't. More than likely, he was doing what he was taught. Profits > People, and with a new baby at home, a great chance for him to make a huge difference financially for his family.
So let me ask you this:
Which one are you?
- Parroting marketing techniques that you were taught that seemingly work for others and have the potential for HUGE income on the front end? Knowing your customers feel "something is off" and yet ignoring their questions anyways? Encouraging them to finance their way out?
- Willing to settle for $235 today, knowing your integrity just created a ripple effect that will cause your customer to trust you OVER and OVER again for years to come? AND refer many others? Playing the long game for connection, knowing that connection = currency?
And as if that wasn't enough: I really can't make this up...
My computer turned back on today.
Keep the attention on Him, surrender to His will, put His values first, and then TAKE ACTION to put them into practice and watch how He comes through for you in life and business in a way that only He can 💖
