What Does Presence Mean to You?
When I first learned to meditate I was told all I needed to do was "be present with my breath". At the time I'm not sure I even knew what that meant. Afterall being present just meant being here. It was the response I gave in grade school when the teacher called my name at roll call. Today presence, to me, is more than just being physically somewhere—it's about showing up with intention. Presence is a quiet power of being fully engaged in a moment, whether that’s listening without distraction, feeling your breath in stillness, or giving someone your undivided attention. I fully experiencedthe value of being present at my first Enlightenment Intensive. For the first time in my life, for 5 minutes someone was fully present for me. It took practice before I could feel I was offering the same in return. I'd spent thousands of hours in therapy and never had I experienced someone being fully present. I grew up in a house with 5 other children. Even when we were sick my mother was couldn't be fully present for 5 minutes, not with 6 children! In a world that constantly pulls us in a thousand directions, presence is a radical act. It’s choosing to pause, to notice, to feel. It’s the difference between hearing and truly listening, between existing and experiencing. Presence means I’m not reacting—I’m responding. Presence is the space where conndection happens, where relationships deepen, and where clarity lives. So when I ask myself, “Am I present?” I’m really asking, “Am I honoring this moment?” Would love to hear what presence means to you, too 🌱 Drop your insights in the comments.
