8 of Wands - Communication
Every Monday, I host live web meetings for the course “Tarot, Card by Card” in Swedish. It’s an online course where we go through all the numbers, one number each week, across all the suits. This Monday we explored the 8s, which are about response—different forms of response. Another word for it is communication. But the 8s are also an energy (a number) connected to karma and reflection. 8 of Wands can be right now—like me communicating with you. And in that, it would be lovely to receive a response 🙂 At least when the Eight is upright, because then it’s positive communication. But sometimes we also need to receive responses we consciously don’t want. It can be hard to understand how that, in the long run, might be exactly what we need. There is always a reason for every card that appears—it is always exactly what we need, even when we don’t want to hear it. Our soul has a different version of what kind of response we truly need. A bit more challenging is the 8 of Cups, where we worry about what others think. No matter what response we receive, we read between the lines. If someone says we are beautiful, the thought isn’t “thank you,” but “why?” And then the mind starts spinning in different directions—do they want something? Do they really mean it? Am I beautiful? Well… there must be a reason for this. And then the feelings continue to spiral deeper and deeper, until the original message—that we are beautiful—turns into the belief that we are worthless. The 8 of Pentacles, on the other hand, that’s where the response comes from within. We listen inwardly to what we need to develop, and when we do that, we receive feedback from the outside world that we gratefully accept. The fourth Eight—8 of Swords. Now it’s the thoughts that spin out of control. While the 8 of Cups is about what others think of us, the 8 of Swords is about what we think of ourselves—or rather, what we don’t like about ourselves. Self-criticism, distrust in our own capacity, which creates chaos in how we receive and interpret feedback.
