Having a blast working with a truly excellent band!! RIG DETAILS: Behringer X Air 16ch 8out with an iPad control surface + K10s for wedges plugged into the house audio of 2x Mackie SRM450s.
Okay @Ian Arriola here’s the breakdown from last night’s gig. 1) we were insane to roll up to a gig without any ops guide, saved show file, or even a INPUT LIST like I love the band but they relied VERY heavily on their previous sound tech 2) the iPad thing was really screwy. My iPad was too new to run the x air mix app, but thank god we found Marco’s iPad because idk how we would’ve mixed the show without an old enough device 3) we ended up using my iPad anyway to run the lyrics sheet for Marco so that was good 4) wild I didn’t catch that the Ethernet cable from the mixer to the wireless access point (which was also an internet router) was plugged into the WAN (internet) port instead of one of the four switch ports. No wonder we couldn’t LLDP it on the network, it wasn’t ON THE NETWORK 5) that venue NEEEEDS proper PA. at the very least, angle the speakers down. I’m thinking some k10s up front with elegant speaker covers, and some quiet delays for the back bar to help with speech intelligibility. 6) venue needs more front light. iPhone clips were rough. (Not our problem but I noticed it) Here’s everything that went right: A) this gig was GOOD, CHEAP, and FAST. Absolutely the best we could do with the day rates we had and the time we were given to sound check B) you were right, it was a very non standard mix. We put vocals in the PA and just used all the instruments to feed the in ears and wedges. This reinforces the fact that mons mixing is actually harder/more critical than foh mixing C) like $10K worth of gear and this setup would be bulletproof. Deadass. Like some solid speakers + a higher input mixer would’ve given every artist their own wedge mix, and a solid WiFi access point would ensure everyone can adjust their own mons mix from their phones D) I’d take 1,000 shitty gear gigs with a great group of people, over 10 epic gear gigs with assholes. This gig reinforced that.
