The 5-Minute Cultural Context Drill
Attached is a fillable pdf to finish up. These are meant to help us develop habits of studying scripture in an interpretive way. Read the below instructions: WORD & WAY COLLECTIVE 5-Minute Cultural Context Drill Entering the Word → Walking the Way “Scripture was written for us, but not to us.” — Word & Way Collective This exercise trains readers to: - Enter the ancient world of the text (Word) - Discern God’s intent within that world (Way) - Carry truth forward faithfully (Walk) Time required: 5 minutes 🧭 THE WORD → ENTER THE WORLD Minute 1 — Locate the Moment Read the passage once without interpretation. Answer briefly: - Speaker: - Audience: - Setting (place / situation): Summary Sentence: This passage occurs in ______________________________ Minute 2 — Identify Cultural Signals Scan again and note anything tied to: - Social roles - Economic realities - Religious practices - Power structures Key cultural assumptions present in the text: 🛤️ THE WAY → DISCERN THE PURPOSE Minute 3 — Original Audience Question Ask the controlling hermeneutical question: What problem did this text address for them? (Check all that apply) - ☐ Survival - ☐ Honor / Shame - ☐ Covenant Faithfulness - ☐ Authority / Power - ☐ Fear / Hope - ☐ Community Order Primary issue addressed: Minute 4 — Acknowledge the Cultural Distance Note where the text feels foreign or difficult. Ancient World Reality: Modern World Reality: (This step prevents misapplication.) 🚶‍♂️ THE WALK → CARRY THE TRUTH FORWARD Minute 5 — Extract the Timeless Principle Do not import ancient practices directly. Yes mine too
Which Version
Which version of the Bible do you use more? Take the poll and tell me why you selected what you did about the different versions of scripture. If you choose others tell us which one and why. If you use all of them—cool! But there will be one you probably use more.

I was saved reading the Living Bible and then when they updated it to the NLT, I switched. I use other translations to study but usually teach and read the NLT. It speaks to me.
Question
Reading scripture and studying scripture Should be the same. Do you agree?

I am like Mike. Reading to me is just reading and enjoying, but at the same time, God has given me revelation in the midst of just reading. One time I read the Bible through in 22 days. God gave me revelation of the repetition in the Bible, how many times men kiss, the unity, etc. that I had never gotten from studying it, delving into it, etc. But I do agree that you glean from the Word whether you are just reading or studying because it is alive and will produce results regardless.
Article on the use of Imagination in Biblical Interpretation
I am attaching a thought provoking read regarding the use of imagination during the hermeneutical process. This is a MUST READ if you are enrolled in the course

So I read it, I gleaned from it, but felt like I was reading the Amplified Bible and I am more a NLT reader. I like to take 20 words and make it 5. So thank you for the read, but I just could not get beyond, Ok how would I shorten all this wordiness? Sorry. I teach simple-minded people and children. But the thoughts were good. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I love 'picturing' what I read. It makes it become alive.
