My Sunday Afternoon Thougts…
You Don't Have Problems. You Have Stories. I heard something recently that really made me stop and think: "You don't have problems. You have stories." The quality of your life is often determined by the quality of the conversations you have with yourself. Think about some of the stories people carry: "I'm not good enough." "I'm not worthy." "Nobody loves me." "I'm not smart enough." "I'm always going to struggle." The interesting thing is that these stories are rarely facts. They're interpretations. Yet because we believe them, we start looking for evidence to prove them right. We notice every failure. We magnify every setback. We dismiss every success. Over time, the story becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. We call it self-sabotage. But perhaps it's simply a person acting in alignment with the identity they have accepted as true. You cannot consistently produce results that are out of alignment with your wiring. You will always gravitate back to who you believe you are. This is why lasting change is not about trying harder. It's about becoming different. Whether the challenge is your health, your finances, your relationships, your confidence, or your happiness, the question is not: "How do I get rid of this problem?" The question is: "Who do I need to become so that this is no longer a problem in my life?" That shift changes everything. Because it moves you from being a victim of your circumstances to becoming the creator of your future. Instead of saying: "This is just the way I am." You begin asking: "What if I've simply been living inside an old story?" We are creative beings. We have the ability to rewrite the stories we tell ourselves. To change our identity. To create different actions. To produce different results. And perhaps that is where real transformation begins. 👇 I'd love to hear from you: What is one story about yourself that you've been believing for far too long? And what is the new story you are choosing to live instead?

@Barry Schutte great share, shining light on a significant part of our identity work which is to pause, observe and reflect on the stories we're telling ourselves - within these stories contain things like confirmation bias, universal quantifiers (i.e. words that signify all or nothing e.g. always, never, everyone, all) and modal verbs (i.e. should, need must) - all of which contribute to us comparing ourselves to others and ultimately feeling like we're not good enough. Identity work helps us start to practice the assertion that 'We have the ability to rewrite the stories we tell ourselves.'
Your Life Is The Receipt Of Your Actions.
You cannot complain about the life you have when you keep avoiding the work required to change it. You say you want confidence… but you keep breaking promises to yourself. You say you want a better body… but your habits are still controlled by emotion, comfort, and excuses. You say you want peace… but you keep feeding the behaviors that are destroying you. At some point, you have to stop blaming: – your past – your circumstances – your lack of motivation – other people And face the truth: Your current life is the receipt for your repeated decisions. The hardest part of transformation is realizing that nobody is coming to save you. Not motivation. Not another Monday. Not another course. Not another “fresh start.” Your future changes the moment your standards change. Because every action is shaping your identity. And eventually… your identity becomes your life. I AM becoming someone I can rely on. 🔥

@Barry Schutte well said - all this doesn't mean you have to have a go at yourself when you are asking yourself these kind of questions. Staying kind to yourself rather than judging gives us the space to shape our identity with our own confidence

@Barry Schutte exactly!
What’s One Version of Yourself You Never Want to Become Again?
Most people are not actually struggling with motivation. They are struggling with identity conflict. Part of them wants growth. Another part is still emotionally attached to the old version of themselves. That’s why: • You procrastinate on the thing you say matters • You self-sabotage after progress • You keep restarting instead of building momentum • You wait to “feel ready” before changing Your habits will always follow your identity. So here’s the real question: 👉 What identity are you finally ready to let go of? Read other people’s answers. You’ll realize you’re not alone. 🔥

@Barry Schutte this is a great start to our work - to identify the characters/identities that we don't like. From here, we have the opportunity to see that these characters/identities are always a part of us and therefore don't need to be destroyed/never be seen again. That would be us rejecting parts of ourselves (into our shadow), and lowering our self worth even further. When we give acceptance, acknowledgement and gratitude for all that the character and identity has done subconsciously for us all these years, we bring our parts together and also give ourselves the message that these characters/identities don't need to run the show anymore, so we can retire them and let our true selves (driven by what we actually want) take charge. For example, The Overthinker The People Pleaser are 2 of my recurring characters/identities in my cast. By this, I mean that overthinking and people pleasing were automatic behaviours for me; by working with these characters, I've found alternative ways to meet the same needs they were meeting, thus letting my true self operate. This doesn't mean I never overthink or people please again, that's happened and will continue to happen - and that's ok. Instead of just letting the characters and identities continue unabated, we've given ourselves an alternative by forging our new identity through our true self
5 Reasons Identity Is More Important Than Goals
Most people are obsessed with goals. But goals without identity rarely last. Here are 5 reasons identity is more important than goals: 1. Goals give direction. Identity determines behaviour. 2. Goals are temporary. Identity becomes a lifestyle. 3. Goals focus on achievement. Identity focuses on transformation. 4. You can hit a goal and still become the same person again. Identity changes who you are permanently. 5. Your life will always align with the identity you believe about yourself. Goals matter. But identity is what sustains the result. You do not rise to your goals. You fall to your identity. 🔥

@Barry Schutte Great, impactful points that give such a powerful alternative to goals, which is what we've always been taught to have and follow incessantly. 'Your life will always align with the identity you believe about yourself.' - the last one in particular spoke to me of how underpinning every goal i.e. our symptom is our identity i.e. our root cause. When we work on our identity first, the accompanying goals and their achievement become a natural byproduct
Your Past is Not your Potential 🪞
Stop looking in the rearview mirror to decide where you’re going. Your past is a collection of experiences, not a blueprint for your future. The mistakes you made? They are data points.The versions of you that didn't know better? They were doing their best to survive. But survival is not your destination. Identity transformation starts when you realize that who you were yesterday doesn't have to be who you are today. Your nervous system can be re-regulated. Your brain can build new pathways. Your story can be rewritten through intention, not just habit. It’s not about erasing where you’ve been. It's about deciding that your history no longer gets to dictate your capacity. You aren’t stuck. You’re just in process. 🕊️✨

@Chané Potgieter great post, thanks for sharing! Lots of great reminders, specially 'your history no longer gets to dictate your capacity' 👏 represents the opportunity for us to be our own pattern interruptor
