Adaptive clothing and fabrics
Hi everyone, kind of a long post and I dad get permission to post. I have a few questions and I need your help. This isn’t just for me, it’s for me to make adaptive clothing for people in need that are affordable. I have condition called gastroparesis, and I am going through some major health changes in my life and I need to make cute and comfortable clothing that are accessible for a feeding tube that will be placed in the upper left of my abdomen, that I need to have 24 hour access to. I first, I am going to alter the usable clothes that I have and second I need to make dresses and shirts that are soft and flowy. Everything that I have looked for is very boxy. Here is 1 example. That’s all I could find on Amazon and google. Questions 1. what fabrics would you suggest I use that are easy to work with? 2. What style of dresses and shirts would you recommend? 3. Should I make 2 piece outfits as well? I appreciate any and all comments and advice given. Please and thank you

Hi Shelby, Fantastic that you plan to create adaptive clothing for a purpose of need. Creating clothes for a niche clientele is still very important as I feel designing for a purpose not only makes a person feel good but could also give them the confidence boost one needs in order for them to feel the best version of themselves. Here are my suggestions. 1: fabric options: jersey, linen and cotton 2: style of dresses and shirts: easy classics with a nice variety of prints. I think lots of purposeful pockets could work also. Maybe drawstring details and clever clean open and closed hidden sections for interest. 3: 2-piece... it's a hell yes from me! 🙏🏾🙌🏾❤️

@Shelby Whitlock yeah great idea. Your also introducing sustainability aspect in your collection so if people have just had this life changing situation that all of a sudden requires change in their clothes, the best solution is to trial and error with the clothes they already have in their wardrobe, you can easily cut into them, add pockets and add the hidden features I suggested. I would start with placing different sizes pockets on the area in different sizes and shapes for interests, start with kangaroo pockets, small pockets, large pockets, pockets with flaps... interesting shape pockets. Or even adding like a unique 3d element on the area like a flower, or some sort of interesting surface technique .. the options are endless

Hi Laura, welcome to the creative community! Nice to have you onboard. Please feel free to post and ask questions as and how you need to. My first question is 'do you have a sewing machine?' If not this is where it's a must you need to get one. I can give you advice if you need assistance on what's the best one to get if you need it. If your completely new to sewing the best steps to start practicing are with different types of seams Closed seams Open seams French seams Bias bound seams Then proceed to curved seams Angled seams The list is endless. As you will rely on working independently your best bet is to search up a lot of 'HOW TO sew a French seam for example?' On YouTube in order to get practicing... Exciting times ahead...
🔥✨ DESIGN DEVELOPMENT IS HERE – LET’S START SKETCHING! ✨🔥
This is the moment where all of your hard work starts to come together! Over the last few weeks you’ve explored, experimented, draped, collaged, sampled textiles, created mark making, and pushed your creativity. Now it’s time to transform those ideas into your initial fashion designs. Don’t forget… your experiments shouldn’t stay in your sketchbook! They should inspire your garments and clearly show the journey from 2D experimentation to 3D design development. Every texture, fold, line, shape and technique you’ve explored should influence your collection. ✏️ Start sketching… and keep sketching! The more designs you create, the stronger your drawing skills will become, the more confident you’ll feel, and the easier it will be to develop exciting ideas. Don’t settle on your first design—challenge yourself to create multiple variations. Sometimes your best idea is sketch number 10, not sketch number 1! ✨ Remember: ✔ Use your experimentation to inspire your designs. ✔ Show clear development from concept to garment. ✔ Create plenty of variations. ✔ Edit down to your strongest collection. ✔ Keep refining and improving. 📩 Once you’ve created your initial sketches, send them through for review. Together we’ll select the strongest designs and build a powerful, professional final line-up. This is where your collection starts to take shape… and I can’t wait to see your creativity shine. Let’s go, Elites! 🚀🔥

🔥✨ WEEK 3: EXPERIMENTATION — LET THE CREATIVE CHAOS BEGIN! ✨🔥
Last week was all about pushing boundaries, taking risks, and showing real audacity in your creative process. There are no limits here — this is your opportunity to explore, play, discover, and develop exciting new ideas from your concept. If you’re unsure where to start, you can choose from: ✏️ Mark Making 🧵 Draping ✂️ Collage 🎨 Colour Experiments 🪡 Textile Sampling 📸 Scanography 👗 Sketching & Silhouette Exploration Remember, your task is to select a minimum of 3 experimentation methods for your sketchbook. Once you’ve chosen them, don’t stop at one example! The goal is to create LOTS of variations and options. If you’re draping, create multiple drape outcomes. If you’re mark making, experiment with different tools, materials, and media. If you’re exploring silhouettes, challenge yourself to generate as many ideas as possible. This stage isn’t about perfection — it’s about discovery. Some of your strongest design ideas will come from the experiments you least expect. So go crazy! Be bold. Be curious. Have audacity! The best students are the ones that are not afraid to explore. Layer, cut, twist, manipulate, draw, paint, stitch, scan and explore every possibility. I hope you’ve been having fun with this week’s experimentation because this is where the REAL design development begins! 🚀 I can’t wait to see what you’ve all come up with. I would love for you to be brave and share your experiments below and let’s celebrate the creative process together! 🔥✨
