I recommend that you pick one scale and really go deep with it, finding out over the next week, month, or year hundreds of new ways to play it. Try these variations: - Instead of starting on the first note of the scale, try starting on every other note of the scale. What about alternating your ending note too? - Play short segments of the scale in increasingly higher or lower plateaus. How high & low can you go? - Play increasingly higher scale segments ("mountains") or increasingly lower scale segments ("valleys")

I just created a new Jazz Flute YouTube Playlist to share with ya'll. You can add to it too!

Find your unique musical voice by copying your favorites. Find examples of musicians you like - they don't have to be flutists! - and do your best to copy them. I'd like to hear your favorites! It will be impossible to copy them 100%! In your effort to sound like them you will get better at the techniques that make their voice or musical style appeal to you. What song will you start with?

Typically a "lick" means a musical quote applied in a new context. This particular lick took the world by storm! Listen to all these examples. I'm attaching a picture of it in E-minor. Try practicing it starting on every note!

We'll be playing with this track tonight at Improv Games. I have it turned down to 85% speed. Have you tried noodling around in a scale of the day with a track like this one? Will you try 120 BPM or will you slow it down?
