Part 2: Moving Beyond Words Monday - The Animals that Changed our Lives
“Animals do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.” — Orhan Pamuk I've been around animals all my life. Like many of you, my journey with each of them has been deeply rewarding and, at times, heartbreaking. From a young age, I felt a profound connection with the cats, dogs, horses, birds, and even wild ponies in my care. They became my safe space, my teachers, and my constant companions. Each relationship helped shape my belief that our connections with animals are partnerships built on trust, respect, and love. But years later, a little Basset Hound named Lacey would change my understanding in ways I never imagined. Lacey came into my life during a time of stress and uncertainty, trembling with fear and anxiety. I knew I needed to find a way to help her feel safe. What I didn't realize then was just how much she would teach me about listening, understanding, and seeing the world through another's eyes. Her story became an important turning point in my journey and ultimately helped inspire Moving Beyond Words – Our Shared Journey. 💬 Now I'd love to hear your story! 🐾 Has there been an animal in your life who profoundly changed you? ❤️ Perhaps they helped you through a difficult time, taught you something about yourself, or changed the way you understand and connect with animals. What did that relationship teach you? Whether they're still by your side or live on in your heart, I'd love for you to share a little about them. After all, sometimes our greatest teachers have four legs, feathers, or fur. 🐾❤️

Part 1: MBW Monday - Learning to Listen
“Animals do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.” Orhan Pamuk Today we're beginning a new weekly conversation inspired by my book, Moving Beyond Words – Our Shared Journey. Each Monday, I'll share a bite-sized idea or passage from the book and invite you to explore what it might mean within your own relationship with your animal companion. You don't need to have read the book to join the conversation—just bring your experiences, observations and curiosity. Communication with our animal companions goes far beyond words. They communicate through body language, behaviour, movement, sounds, choices and sometimes simply by the way they respond to us. The more we learn to notice these subtle signals, the more we begin to understand the world from their point of view. It can as so subtle that you don't even recognize it as being a form of communication, it could have developed over time, and you may not even realize that you are connecting beyond words. What is something your animal companion does that you know is communicating something to you—even though no words are involved?

Maggie Mae jumps and bites my hands when I pick up her leash. If she needs to go out, she'll stare at me, when I get up she'll bite my feet. I'm pretty sure she does this from trying to get attention in the shelter, but it's been one of the hardest thing to break her from doing it. I carry around her collar and leash to desensitize her, but as soon as I forget, she starts again.

I try to ignore her when she does it. I'll turn around and walk away and come back when she's calmed down. I use treats too, they work the best of course. I have a spot that I have her go to on a step, and sit. We just keep doing it over and over until she sits and stops nipping at my hands. She thinks it's playing sometimes too. She's very excitable. If she hears me ask someone to take her out, she runs to that person and nips at them, then runs away. They ignore her too, and get her when she's calmed down and still. If we act to excited she starts jumping and nipping too. It's almost like she can't help it. I'll use hand signals to get her to sit and go where I want. Words don't work unless I yell, I try not to do that lol She'll usually listen immediately if food is involved but I want her to listen without it, I don't always have treats and she's putting on weight 🫤 I love the bell idea, I definitely want to get the talking buttons too.
🌿 World Mental Health Day — The Healing Power of Connection 🐾💚
Today is World Mental Health Day, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role our animal companions play in our emotional well-being. Sometimes they seem to know exactly when we need a little extra comfort. A gentle nudge, a warm body curled up beside us, an invitation to play, or simply their quiet presence can make a difficult day feel a little lighter. But connection goes both ways. 💞 Just as our animal companions can influence how we feel, our own emotional state can influence how they experience the world around them. 🐾 So let's have a little Saturday check-in! What does your animal companion do that makes you smile, feel comforted, or simply helps you feel better? 💚 Curl up beside you when you need comfort? 🐕 Encourage you to get outside and enjoy some fresh air? 🐈 Make you laugh with their silly antics? 🐾 Offer quiet companionship without expecting anything in return? ✨ Or something entirely unique to the relationship you share? Share a story, a photo, or even just a few words in the comments! And here's a little something extra to think about: 💞 How do YOU help your animal companion feel safe, supported, and connected? Because at Moving Beyond Words, we believe that wellness isn't just something we experience individually. It's something we nurture together. The relationship is the classroom. Life provides the lessons. Together, we'll discover what's possible. 🐾💚

My animals bring me so much comfort, especially when I'm dealing with my chronic pain or just having a rough day. ❤️ They're all emotional support animals to me in their own ways, and they do so much for my mental health. It's amazing how they seem to know when I need a little extra love. They'll curl up right next to me, sometimes even finding the exact spot where I'm hurting, and just being close to them helps me feel better. Taking care of them helps my mental health, too. Brushing them, making sure they're happy and comfortable, and spending one-on-one time with each of them gives me something positive to focus on, helps me relax, and brings me happiness even on difficult days. Sometimes, when you're struggling yourself, having someone else to care for reminds you how much love you still have to give. ❤️ I hope I'm able to give them that same comfort and sense of security in return. I try to pay attention to their individual needs, give them their own safe spaces, and make sure they know they're loved. I know I still have a lot to learn about understanding them better, which is one of the reasons I'm so excited to be part of this group. I want to keep growing right alongside my animal companions. ❤️🐾
What if your animal companion’s behaviour isn’t something to fix — but something to understand?
We often notice the obvious things first. One companion seems to need constant connection. Another needs space. One embraces every new experience with enthusiasm, while another needs time to observe before deciding whether something feels safe. Some seem incredibly sensitive to changes in their environment. Others appear to take almost everything in stride. But why? One of the lenses I use in Moving Beyond Words comes from the Five Elemental Archetypes — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each reflects different tendencies, strengths, sensitivities and needs. And here’s where it gets especially interesting… You have an Elemental nature too. So understanding your companion is only part of the picture. When we begin looking at both sides of the relationship, we can start noticing where our natural tendencies complement each other — and where they may sometimes create misunderstanding or tension. You may already have an idea which Element sounds like your companion. Or you may be completely surprised. 😊 I’ve added a resource in the classroom where you can explore the Elemental Archetypes, learn a little more about this approach, and then — when you’re curious enough — discover both your Element and your companion’s through the Guardian and Companion quizzes. Because the quiz isn't really the destination. It's a starting point for looking at your relationship through a different lens. 👉 Explore the Elemental Archetypes and discover your starting point here: Take the Elemental Quiz 🐾 - Take the Elemental Companion QUIZ! · Moving Beyond Words And when you do take the quizzes, come back and tell us:

@Arlana Tanner Usually I have to bring her to me to brush her. When I was doing the cats last night she came up and stood still while I did it. It's so funny, I start with one and little by little each one comes up and flops down to be pampered 🥰

@Arlana Tanner She did! I usually have to bring her to me, so this is huge 😀 It's funny because some of the cars will rub all over her while she's being brushed too. They really get along so well.... Except the last male that I was able to TNR. He's very possessive of me. He'd hide outside and run after her when we would walk out back. He still hides but she's just interested in food 🤣 He's inside most of the time now.
