Mastering Review
Hi everyone, I’ve just finished mastering this mix from the Cambridge Multitracks library, and I’d really appreciate some constructive feedback. The main issue I encountered was in the first verse, when the vocals enter. Because of the limited instrumentation in the background, the vocals sounded slightly off. I managed to improve this, but I feel the issue might still be present, just less noticeable. I’d also love to hear your thoughts on the overall balance. Please note that this is not my song, and I don’t have access to the multitrack files, so I’m unable to go back to the mix. I’ll post here the original mix (downloaded directly from Cambridge), the two reference tracks I used, and the final master.

@Tom Baldwin Does loudness matter, and can it affect the way we perceive music in different ways? Every time I master a track, I find myself asking: should I master this song to 6 LUFS, 7 LUFS, or 8 LUFS? For example, the Flyleaf song reaches about 6 LUFS—could that level influence the clarity and overall sonic character of the track? What I've done reaches about 8 LUFS. What are the benefits and drawbacks of mastering music at 6 LUFS? The Rat Race master reaches about 6 LUFS.

@Tom Baldwin Thanks a lot.I'm gonna try that.🤗
Hey everyone, I wanted to share a project I’m really proud of.
One of my artist clients and friends, @Canyon Cottle, just released his debut album, and it’s been about a year in the making. I met Canyon at a local open mic back in my hometown and was immediately struck by his songwriting, voice, and sincerity. At the time, he didn’t even have music on Spotify yet, and now here we are with a full album out in the world. This project has been a joy to work on. Canyon takes his craft seriously, puts in the work, and genuinely loves making music. He’s got big goals of touring, traveling, and continuing to grow as an artist, and this release is a huge step in that direction. If you’re into mountain folk / indie folk-pop vibes, I think you’ll really enjoy this one. And more than anything, I just want to give Canyon a public high-five because writing and recording an album is not easy, and seeing it through to the release takes commitment and heart. Congrats, Canyon. Proud of you, dude! Here’s the album if you want to check it out: https://open.spotify.com/album/0zIlKfRX6Eq11BlZBUsX2v

How do you start writing or recording a new song?
Hi everyone. Sometimes it can be difficult to finish a song, so I wanted to ask how you usually start recording one. 1. Do you begin with a simple piano arrangement, record the best vocal takes you can, and then build the instrumental arrangement around them? 2. Do you write and arrange the entire song first, and only then record the vocals? 3. Do you start by recording the elements that matter most and define the vibe of the song, and then add other elements that give it color? What is your personal workflow?

What courses helped you the most in your musical journey??
Hi everyone, I’ll start first. For me, mastering.com courses helped a lot in gaining more confidence in both mixing and mastering. I completed Mastering Intensive course:https://courses.mastering.com/product/mastering-intensive-1749819349785x486499434710946800 It helped me develop an “end-in-mind” approach to the sound I want to achieve and significantly improved my mixes. I also completed the Mixing Intensive course:https://courses.mastering.com/product/mixing-intensive-1759158367686x585094289915401500?utm_source=Banner This course helped me learn how to build a solid and consistent mixing workflow. Syntorial:https://www.syntorial.com This is a synthesizer-building course designed like a game, which makes it really fun to learn. It helped me study sound design techniques in depth. For acoustic and electric guitar, an affordable course I bought and learned a lot from is:Complete Guitar Lessons System – Beginner to Advancedhttps://www.udemy.com/course/complete-guitar-system-beginner-to-advanced/ I learned many interesting guitar techniques that I didn’t even know were possible. What are the courses that helped you the most?
