Production Choices
Biggest question/takeaways from production event is what if you are not a drummer, keyboardist, cellist, violinist etc? I can program in a basic four on the floor and trust that NI algorithm is going to give at least a human feel but it’s going to be miles away from what an actual drummer can do (listening to my painful attempt at fills is enough ) So when and where do I decide to be the jack-of-all-trades and eek out my basic knowledge of the scale of a cello, or go research how a cello is played, or just go find a real cellist for the track?

The answers are alll around you believe it or not! Stream or listen to any song in the genre you like, then listen more. Take notes of the fills you like, the melodic lines you hear, etc. this is the quickest and easiest way to get better. Even as a drummer, I’d rather get inspiration from listening to reference tracks to hear what the pros do. It is illuminating. Good luck!
