After making bowls and mugs for 9 months- I was able to throw a 6 in cylinder with 2 pounds of clay.. I didn’t keep it but will keep practicing. Luminary still drying waiting to trim.

@Christine Smart that looks like an awesome mug!
Luminaries (January 2026)
Our first community project is finally here! If you check out the classroom there are two brand new tutorials for making either a hand-built or wheel-thrown version. My hope is that you would run wild with this project and make it completely your own. This thread is for questions, comments, and brainstorming. Feel free to ask questions, answer questions, and post progress pictures. Have fun, be encouraging, and make something you love!

Ugh- I’m realizing that I need to work on throwing a narrow cylinder with 2 pounds of clay over 6 inches.. I think most of the pieces I have made are under this height. I made a couple of luminaries today will share tomorrow. 😜

@Trey Foster that’s a great idea! Thank you!
Community projects
Each month I will be releasing a new project for everyone to participate in at the same time (if you want). I really love getting to see how different people interpret the same assignment, especially between wheel throwers and hand builders. I’ll always drop the video and description at the beginning of the month, and then over that month people can post pictures of their progress, ask questions, or give feedback within the group. Januarys community project is a luminary/wax melter/oil diffuser. I wish I had a better name for them but when you see the pictures I think you’ll understand! The video has a wheel thrown version and a hand built version and I think they both turned out really nicely. Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions or questions!

Hi Trey. I am trying to figure out the measurements on the luminary and the top. The top I just made looks like it is half the size of the luminary. Can you send info about the height of both?? Thanks!!!

Show us your favorite mug!
I love seeing people’s favorite mugs. I think it says a lot about you! I had a really hard time choosing but this mug is by a guy named Andrew Clark and it’s just incredible.

This one is my fav and best mug so far. I have been playing with Amaco glaze combinations (honey flux x 3 under textured turquoise top and sapphire float below).
How often are you muddy?
Just curious, how often are you in your studio or workspace?

I have a pottery wheel in the garage and go to a local studio once a week to fire and glaze. I had good initial beginner instruction but not much at the intermediate level and keep making the same thing (bowls and mugs). :-). Your videos on instagram gave me tips to center and trim and I am excited to learn more!

@Trey Foster I have been practicing and watching videos on my own and somehow stumbled on your videos which were very helpful. In the studio, the owner is mostly making his own stuff but is there to help if you have questions. I still have trouble making a tall cylinder. I will definitely try the January project!
